Breathing Easy

Asthma is one of the most common chronic illnesses often diagnosed in childhood. But asthma doesn’t only affect children. In 2013, Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) reported that roughly 3.9 million South Africans live with asthma, and of those, asthma will prove fatal to 1.5% each year. Thanks to this, South Africa has the fourth highest rate of asthma-related deaths in the world.

There are many opinions and arguments surrounding the medication available for asthma patients and whether or not any of it is effective. The cost of medication alone is staggering, and the worry that it isn’t as effective as it should be causes more stress than necessary. We’ve decided to organise a few natural remedies that can assist those suffering with asthma. Please be advised that these natural remedies should not replace existing inhalers and medications without first consulting your doctor, or testing for allergies.

  1. Steam Baths
Steam baths have been a go-to when treating nasal congestion airway irritation caused by asthma. It is believed that steam baths provide moisture for dried and inflamed airways that worsen due to asthma. A nice, warm bath is also a great way to alleviate stress that may trigger asthma attacks.
  2. Liquorice Root
Asthma patients have found that Liquorice Tea has soothed their asthma symptoms, and reduces the associated discomfort.
  3. Lobelia
Lobelia is an emetic, expectorant and respiratory stimulant and has been known to help treat bronchitis as well as is widely used to ease the symptoms of asthma. A few drops in a cup of tea will work wonders for asthma patients.

It is important to recognise the early signs of an asthma attack, as doing so may not only save your life, but it can lower the intensity of an attack, making treatment easier. Wheezing, a tight chest, feeling breathless and finding it difficult to walk or talk are signs you may be having an asthma attack. Remember to carry your inhalers with you at all times and sit up straight if you feel you may be experiencing an attack.

It is recommended you see a specialist to determine any allergies you may have and whether it is safe for you to try these remedies. It is also recommended you continue with prescribed medication depending on the severity of your condition. However, these remedies have proved to be among the best and most turned to for most upper respiratory illnesses and conditions, and we hope they help you breathe easy.
